# Visual formulas vs DAX with Marco Russo

Gopal Krishnamurthy (CEO, Lumel - xViz, ValQ, Inforiver) and Reid Havens (Microsoft MVP) discuss and debate the new architecture approach adopted by Inforiver with Marco Russo as moderator. Marco has advocated for visual-level calculations with his [blog](https://www.sqlbi.com/articles/a-proposal-for-visual-calculations-in-dax/), and Inforiver delivers these new capabilities to Power BI.

Join them as they use their unique industry backgrounds to provide perspectives on how Inforiver can be a smooth transition for Excel users to Power BI using a no-code visual-level calculation user experience. They also discuss how developers and business end users can benefit from features such as visual formulas, excel-like formatting, commenting, planning, paginated reports, and writeback.

# Build a P\&L / Income statement in less than 5 minutes

In this video learn how Inforiver helps you build your P\&L / Income statement in less than 5 minutes without using DAX.

Anyone who has attempted to build a P\&L / income / financial reporting statement in Power BI using the native table or matrix visual knows how time-consuming the task can be. The complication comes from several reasons, including but not limited to

(a) having to encode a custom sort order for accounts in the data model

(b) using DAX to not only perform calculations but also to conditionally populate rows based on GL accounts/subtotals

(c) formatting limitations

(d) limitations in handling accounting signs (+/-), and more.

# Layout options

Inforiver offers two major types of layout options - Table layouts and Measure layouts.

Table layout such as hierarchy, outline, table, stepped and drill down lets you determine how categories in rows need to be displayed.

Measure layouts - Show values in rows/columns give you flexibility specifically with respect to how measures are displayed. Watch this video for a quick overview.

# Advanced filtering

Perform advanced filtering in matrix/table reports using Inforiver for Power BI. Some of the capabilities are

(a) Nested AND/OR filters to filter either row or column hierarchies, or by measures

(b) Conditions depending on the type of filter selected

(c) Ability to add multiple filter groups

# Nested top N + others

In business scenarios, it is very common for decision-makers to examine the following: Customers contributing to the most revenue, Spend Categories that consume most of the budget, Key vendors from whom we procure the most and more.

This can be easily achieved using the top/bottom N + others feature in Inforiver. You can also

(a) Create nested rules - like the bottom 3 sub-categories in each of the top 2 categories

(b) Create multi-level nested rules - by increasing the number of hierarchy levels even beyond two

(c) Append the category name to 'Others' for each instance of others

# Conditional formatting

Conditional formatting in dashboards and reports is key to guiding users’ attention to specific performance areas. Compared to charts, tabular reports have higher information density which makes conditional formatting a lot more useful. There are two ways to apply conditional formatting using Inforiver -

(a) Using quick, one-click options such as quick rules, color scales, classification and data bars

(b) Creating advanced rules from scratch using nested if-conditions, ranking etc.

# Comments with filter context

Inforiver cracks the code for implementing true, dynamic commentary in Power BI tables that respond to the context set by filters/slicers.

Till date, to implement dynamic, context-sensitive commentary, your comments had to come from your Power BI data model (like any other dimension). However, when you facilitate user-entered comments, the solution would cease to be dynamic.

But not anymore!

Inforiver allows you to capture context-aware comments without any dependence on IT - as this solution does not need any database, server, or writeback service. And what's more - this solution also works for row-level, cell-level, and column-level comments.

# One-click templates

Inforiver provides one of the fastest ways to build reports in Power BI, and one of the reasons for this is the availability of one-click templates. In this video, learn about the different types of templates offered -

(a) Grid templates are used to build typical tabular reports

(b) Financial templates are ideal for building financial reports and statements

(c) Performance templates are useful when you need to showcase observed performance against a benchmark and follow the IBCS standards

# Pagination

In this video, explore how Inforiver can be used to create paginated reports with First-Previous-Next-Last navigation.

While using hierarchies, you can also insert smart row/column breaks (which start the next parent category on the next page) and smart section breaks (that insert a blank row before each category).

You can use the search option to look for specific words or values. Nested AND/OR filtering and column filtering can be applied to filter records based on conditions.

# Expand/collapse hierarchy

Inforiver provides a number of options to manage hierarchies such as expanding or collapsing row/column hierarchies to specified levels, descendants and more. Currently, in a native Power BI matrix, you cannot expand or collapse columns freely as you can do with rows.

With Inforiver, you can expand/collapse specific columns to reveal their children, just as we can do with the row hierarchies in the native Power BI visual.

# Comparative measures

Inforiver delivers in-built charting intelligence to manage measures better. Measure management is a feature that is unique to Inforiver. In the earlier versions, the product used 4 separate fields in the Power BI fields pane to capture data – AC, PY, PL and FC. Naturally, many users unfamiliar with IBCS standards had a confusing time assigning fields.

Currently, the comparative measure assignment is abstracted into Measure Management which is accessible through the toolbar menu. This ensures that casual users (who constitute more than 90% of Power BI users) do not have to learn about measure assignments or deal with the complexity of managing four different fields.

Watch the video to learn more about the multiple use cases that Inforiver covers, listed below:

(a) Visualize measures and variances using the IBCS standards in Power BI

(b) Split one measure into multiple measures with a time period without using any DAX formula in Power BI

(c) Create new measures in Power BI while using DirectQuery

(d) Comparison of multiple instances of different measures in Power BI

(e) Compare and visualize non-time-based data in Power BI
